This question, appearing on most newspapers after every riot, such as the one in Rome on December 14, deserves an answer. Do you want to see what our faces look like, when they are not hidden by scarves, helmets and balaclavas?

They are the same faces that pay the rent for your scruffy flats, the faces to whom you offer unpaid internships or full time employment for £800 a month. They are the faces that pay thousands of pounds to attend your lectures. They are the faces of the kids that you slap when you catch them with some weed in their pocket. They are the faces that have to run out of the bus when the inspectors appear, as they couldn’t afford to travel otherwise.

L’Italia vista da Londra sta cambiando colore. Niente più spiagge dorate, piatti di pasta fumanti e donne generosamente svestite. Gli occhi delle nuove generazioni inglesi vedono il fumo delle camionette bruciate alzarsi sulla penisola e di colpo sembrano accorgersi di quanto fosse rimasto finora nascosto dalla luce accecante del sole del mediterraneo.

Sono soprattutto gli studenti, in marcia per le strade di Londra o asserragliati in dozzine di universita’ occupate, che oggi rivolgono lo sguardo verso l’Italia in cerca di un’ispirazione che non sia più quella stantia dei classici.

What is happening in Rome and in many other Italian cities, what happened in London only few days ago, marks the beginning of the decade. It's going to be a decade of conflict and self-defense of society, against a ruling class that is violent and corrupt, against financial capitalism that is literally starving the social sphere, against mafia, that is using power to embezzle social resources.

In Rome, on December 14th a Parliament of corrupts celebrates the Godfather's victory. In London, on December 9th, a Parliament of liars has ordained the destruction of public education.

Un albero lo si conosce dai suoi frutti, e una democrazia la si conosce dalle tecniche che adopera per affrontare il dissenso. La pratica del kettle (letteralmente ‘bollitore per il tè’) è forse la più rappresentativa di tutte le inquietanti forme di controllo che la legislazione inglese sta praticando, durante queste prime rivolte post-crisi. Sperimentata già negli anni Ottanta in Germania Ovest e poi rispolverata da qualche lustro in mezza Europa, essa è un modo subdolo e astuto per portare le folle all’inoffensività, senza lasciare segni duraturi sulla pelle, o quasi; soprattutto, per risucchiare in un le folle in un vero e proprio «buco nero» del territorio urbano.

      1. Un ultimatum est lancé à la surface du monde, et c’est le monde lui- même qui se l’est adressé.
