Ten years after 1968, Italy was probably the only Western European country in which the wave of rebellion and dangerous dreaming of the 60s hadn’t yet exhausted its energy. The desire for autonomy, communism and communization seemed to be deeply rooted both in the hearts of the factory workers and in those of the students. While the institutional apparatus of the P.C.I. appeared determined to entrench itself within the parliamentary framework and the rhetoric of gradual and progressive social change, myriad other groups were still opting for the uncompromising strategy of full communism ‘here and now’. Countless collective experiences, free radios, workers’ associations and even armed groups were, at that time, still blossoming in almost every Italian city.

In 1931 Mussolini asked the Italian academics to swear allegiance to the Fascist regime. Only a dozen of them – out of 1600 – refused to subdue. The best minds were already abroad: Piero Sraffa was teaching in Cambridge as an exile, and scholars like Enrico Fermi who were working on the most advanced frontiers of physics were already in the US.
Something similar is happening today in this country where twice in a century totalitarian barbarism has found its political shape. While Berlusconi government is destroying the public school and the University, the academic class is not less coward than it was in 1931.

Appoggiato sulla balaustra del palazzo dei congressi, vedo il bus partire.
Ho evitato di attendere la partenza alla fermata per non sembrare troppo… diciamo ridicolo, anche se non è il termine migliore. Voglio evitare di dare l’idea di quello che si prende subito per la prima ragazza che gli presta attenzione, ma… se ho passato tutta la notte in giro per Parigi assieme ai compagni di Rimini è perché Sabrina e i suoi occhi mi avevano stregato. Meglio non starci a pensare.

La Costituzione di Bronte

Ormai da anni l’Italia berlusconiana sembra dividersi tra i difensori strenui della Costituzione e quelli che la ritengono una reliquia di un’epoca passata. Che sia usata come scudo, arma o anatema, comunque, la Costituzione viene ancora unanimemente considerata il cardine, anche solo simbolico, di quello che può essere chiamato il ‘contratto sociale’ degli italiani. Eppure, al di là degli strepiti di questa infinita polemica, resta un particolare tutt’altro che irrilevante: ci sono ampie zone d’Italia, quale l’intero meridione, in cui questa Costituzione non sembra avere mai veramente attecchito.
