After the Occupy Wall Street "People's Library" was brutally dismantled by the police, last November, I asked some of my favourite writers, activists, and academics to help me compile a list of books that would recreate, though only virtually, the library's shelves.
This is the second part of the answers I collected.

La clase política, la izquierda, parece haber alcanzado, terminada la larga marcha durante la cual se creó la ilusión del Estado de bienestar, su meta, su paraíso, su tierra prometida: la integración en el Estado capitalista, El Estado hegeliano u orwelliano, siempre el Estado, como meta final al que las izquierdas, como el hijo pródigo, vuelve de rodillas en actitud de adoración. El Estado, representación del patriarcado freudiano, al que, atrapada en un sentimiento de culpa por haber sido, en otros tiempos, revolucionaria, vuelven las izquierdas renunciando a la revolución. En este panorama estepario se encuentran atrapadas las contradicciones, antaño dialécticas y por tanto antagónicas, de las clases sociales.

Qualche settimana fa, nella sezione “culturale” dell’Evening Standard, pubblicarono una foto: erano ritratti otto ragazzi, sui venti anni, seduti su una scalinata di un palazzo medievale. Erano vestiti, da buoni londinesi “intellettuali”, in uno stile fintamente casual-sciatto; erano tutti sorridenti; due di loro maneggiavano un cellulare; una giovinetta aveva un pc sulle ginocchia: «Stiamo parlando di tecnologia», sembrava dire. Chi erano costoro? Erano loro quelli che lo Standard chiamava, con un bel titolone, Clicktivists, attivisti del “click”. Ecco i volti nuovi della protesta di questi mesi: coloro che usano i social network come Facebook o Twitter per organizzare manifestazioni, coordinarsi, promuovere scioperi. [1]

I would like to talk about something that everybody knows, but that, so it seems, no one has the boldness to say. That is, that the time for indignation is over. Those who get indignant are already starting to bore us. Increasingly, they seem to us like the last guardians of a rotten system, a system without dignity, sustainability or credibility. We don't have to get indignant anymore, we have to revolt.

Vorrei parlare di una cosa che tutti sappiamo ma che nessuno sembra avere la spudoratezza di dire: e cioè che il tempo dell'indignazione è passato e chi si indigna già comincia ad annoiarci, comincia a parerci ogni giorno di più l’ultimo difensore di un sistema marcio, di un sistema privo di dignità, privo di sostenibilità, privo di credibilità. Noi non ci dobbiamo più indignare, noi dobbiamo insorgere.

Recently, I have been asked several times by Italian friends and comrades to talk about the British student movement. I must confess that their questions always made me feel slightly embarrassed.
At first, I tried to forget about this uncomfortable feeling, talking about the rise of a new civic participation, which had been lacking in this country since the 1980s, with the brief exception of the anti-war movement of 2003. Then, in my heart of hearts, I tried to offer to my embarrassment the acknowledgment that in the UK, at the moment, there is not a ‘movement’ as such, rather a constellation of small groups and organizations.

This question, appearing on most newspapers after every riot, such as the one in Rome on December 14, deserves an answer. Do you want to see what our faces look like, when they are not hidden by scarves, helmets and balaclavas?

They are the same faces that pay the rent for your scruffy flats, the faces to whom you offer unpaid internships or full time employment for £800 a month. They are the faces that pay thousands of pounds to attend your lectures. They are the faces of the kids that you slap when you catch them with some weed in their pocket. They are the faces that have to run out of the bus when the inspectors appear, as they couldn’t afford to travel otherwise.

L’Italia vista da Londra sta cambiando colore. Niente più spiagge dorate, piatti di pasta fumanti e donne generosamente svestite. Gli occhi delle nuove generazioni inglesi vedono il fumo delle camionette bruciate alzarsi sulla penisola e di colpo sembrano accorgersi di quanto fosse rimasto finora nascosto dalla luce accecante del sole del mediterraneo.

Sono soprattutto gli studenti, in marcia per le strade di Londra o asserragliati in dozzine di universita’ occupate, che oggi rivolgono lo sguardo verso l’Italia in cerca di un’ispirazione che non sia più quella stantia dei classici.
