After almost 20 years of declining stagnation under Berlusconi&rsquo;s rule, and after the brief but devastating experience of &lsquo;austerity politics&rsquo; as enforced by Monti, everybody expected the Italian Left to conquer absolute majority in both chambers of the Parliament.
