Imagine you're living in a country not very different from Italy. You can breath the corruption in the air, the great public works cost three times more than anywhere else and are never finished and the winners of the public auctions are decided by a phone call. The press - when not "porniphicated" - is declared by the authorities "a menace for the national security" and the opposition - when it's not the government's accomplice - is only patient and waiting for the electoral wheel to turn in its favor.

Imagineaza-ti ca traiesti intr-o tara asemanatoare cu Italia. Coruptia se transmite prin aer, marile opere publice costa de trei ori mai mult si nu sunt niciodata finalizate iar castigatorii licitatilor publice se decid cu un telefon dat cui trebuie. Presa – cand nu e total “pornificata” – este declarata “un pericol pentru siguranta nationala” iar opozitia – cand nu e complice – e rabdatoare si asteapta, sperand ca roata electorala sa se invarte in favoara ei.

In June of 2000 58 Chinese people died of mass suffocation in the container of a lorry that arrived on a ferry at Dover. They died trying to enter the UK illegally. The direct cause of these deaths was the blocking of the air vents worked into the container by the driver, a Dutchman, Perry Wacker. He is the worst of criminals, a panicker lacking the basic nerve required, in this case, cutting the air supply from a fear of being caught. The reporting of the case by large sections of the British media was either downright callous, or sympathetic in abstract terms only, the horror felt from putting ourselves in the shoes of those who died, presumed to be too much.
