Something new and important happened during the “weekend of resistance” in St. Louis, Missouri. The event, organized by the campaign group Hands Up United plus a myriad groups from across the US, was billed as four days of civil disobedience, mass protest and debates to respond to the killing of an unarmed 18 year-old by a white police officer on August 9 in Ferguson.

What happened there went beyond the routinely protest against police violence and grotesque militarization of urban space. It entered a deeper confrontation: that taking place between the younger and the older generation of black activists. A generational divide that may probably mark and set the tone for the future fights to come.

On October 12, I was one of the 2,000 people who attended an interfaith rally at St. Louis University’s Chaifetz Arena. The event featured noted author Cornel West as keynote speaker, in front of an audience composed by a majority of black people and a numerous contingent of “white allies” (as they are dubbed in activist circles) cheering at every intervention. It was the “American tradition” of civil rights movements ready for the usual show-off.

Nie sposób nie przywołać tutaj ulubionego powiedzenia brytyjskiego premiera: w tym historycznym momencie europejskie klasy niższe i średnie rzeczywiście „są w tym wszystkim razem”.

Sono quasi quattrocento anni che una rivolta di queste dimensioni non si verifica a Londra. Quest’inverno, durante le manifestazioni degli studenti inglesi, la stampa internazionale aveva parlato di ‘riots’, di subbugli, di insurrezione. Un tipico caso di esagerazione giornalistica. Stavolta no. Ma stavolta è diverso.

Le riots di questi giorni, iniziate sabato 7 agosto durante una manifestazione di protesta per l’uccisione di un giovane da parte della polizia, hanno un tono che ricorda più le banlieues parigine che la guerriglia urbana dei black bloc. Da tre giorni la capitale Britannica è attraversata da un’ondata di jacquerie semi-fantascientifiche, in cui i moti di folla da ancien regime si incontrano con i messaggi istantanei lanciati dai BlackBerries.

Dangerous alliances: class and the student movement

Recently, I have been asked several times by Italian friends and comrades to talk about the British student movement. I must confess that their questions always made me feel slightly embarrassed.
At first, I tried to forget about this uncomfortable feeling, talking about the rise of a new civic participation, which had been lacking in this country since the 1980s, with the brief exception of the anti-war movement of 2003. Then, in my heart of hearts, I tried to offer to my embarrassment the acknowledgment that in the UK, at the moment, there is not a ‘movement’ as such, rather a constellation of small groups and organizations.

Le Regole! Va bene combattere il Tiranno, ma guai a toccare le Regole. Le Regole sono i chicchi del rosario al quale si aggrappano i martiri del berlusconismo, mentre i suoi pretoriani li gettano nella fossa coi leoni. Da una parte abbiamo un potere che corrompe giudici, paga servizi segreti deviati, usa tv e giornali come carri armati, assolda qualunque firma e volto compiacente per scatenare condanne infami anche sulle manifestazioni più innocue.
