Negli anni ’50 e ’60 mio padre portava a casa ogni giorno L’Unità. Dopo il ’68 lessi altri giornali, e L’Unità mi divenne sempre più antipatico, poi il movimento del 1977 ebbe nell’Unità un avversario, spesso sleale. Quel giornale attaccò il movimento di studenti ed emarginati fino ad accusarlo di squadrismo. Diffamò le avanguardie operaie che alla Fiat al Petrolchimico e all’Alfa cercavano di dare alle lotte operaie una direzione radicalmente anticapitalista.

Oggi quel giornale non esiste più.

Ha chiuso perché la sconfitta generale del movimento operaio ha disaffezionato i suoi lettori che sono rimasti pochi, almeno a paragone del milione di lettori che aveva negli anni in cui mio padre ne era diffusore. Ha chiuso perché la classe politica ignorante liberista e autoritaria che oggi dirige il partito democratico vuol cancellare le tracce del passato. La chiusura di quel giornale provoca in me un sentimento di tristezza immensa: un mondo che potevo capire, con cui potevo interagire polemicamente è cancellato da un mondo opaco che non è più comprensibile secondo le categorie della lotta di classe, ma neppure secondo le categorie della democrazia e della razionalità politica, e forse neppure secondo le categorie dell’umanesimo e dell’umanità.

Non rimpiango L’Unità che nel 1977, seguendo un copione classicamente stalinista accusò me e migliaia di intellettuali operai e studenti di essere provocatori, come non rimpiango il movimento cui partecipai in quegli anni. Né L’Unità né il movimento autonomo seppero anticipare e interpretare praticamente la trasformazione che si stava determinando nel rapporto tra operai e capitale, e tra società tecnologia e potere.

The People’s Carnival that took place in the town of Pomigliano (Southern Italy) in 1977 was an exemplary moment in the history of the Italian Left. Combining folk music, art performance and a radical language, thousands automobile workers and their families gathered up against austerity. The event was depicted in a documentary that I screened (in an edited version) during the event New Politics of Autonomy, at Bluestockings Bookstore, New York, on October 27, 2013, together with Ben Morea (founder of the Black Mask group). This is an excerpt from the talk.

At the end of the 1970s, Italy was going through a traumatic yet extremely creative phase of its history. Those were the heydays of the Autonomia movement: radical extra-parliamentary groups (composed by students, unionists, workers, unemployed) were fiercely confronting the austerity politics imposed by the bigot, mafia ridden Christian-Democrats (DC) with the complicity of the Communist Party (PCI). While society was increasingly subjected to militarization, corruption was rampant; the decaying political establishment was more arrogant than ever. The party founded by Antonio Gramsci was seen as a Stalinist oppressor by the movement, the big unions as its partners in crime. Not a single day passed without a major demonstration or a few Molotov bombs thrown at the police.

I wanted to introduce the film by considering two different encounters that I have had with it, prioritising the sensation and experience of my encounters and considering how these two encounters have shaped my understanding of the film and what it means to have screened it in a variety of locations over the past 3 years. It goes without saying that my experience of the film now is vastly different to how it was three years ago so this has not been the way in which I have introduced the film up to now and I am leaving the opportunity open to find alternative ways of learning from each encounter. That is to say, this is not going to be the only way to introduce it in subsequent screenings – this presentation now, is not a model for future presentations.

Finalmente potrò rivedere questo splendido paesaggio, dall’altra parte delle montagne. Per quanto tempo mi è stata preclusa la vista del versante Italiano?

Condannato una prima volta a sette anni e mezzo, con l’aggravante del “terrorismo”. Hanno così potuto utilizzare il moltiplicatore di pena del “2,5”: se ti becchi 3 anni te li moltiplicano per 2,5 cosicché alla fine prendi 7 anni e mezzo. Dopo altri nove anni dalla sentenza mi affibbiano un’altra condanna per gli stessi tipi di reato, con con l’applicazione di nove mesi in “reato continuato” … Dopo appena ventitré anni posso finalmente andare in estinzione di pena.

Il Trasloco (Moving out of the future) is a 1991 independent documentary directed by Renato de Maria, was screened for the first time in the UK with English subtitles as part of a project by Auto Italia South East, London. The film is set in Bologna and retrospectively depicts the history of one of the key places where Autonomia took place during the 1970s. It was translated and subtitled through a collaboration between Auto Italia and Through Europe.

In 1972, Franco Berardi, aka ‘Bifo’, moved with couple of friends into a flat at the number 19 of Via Marsili, in Bologna’s medieval city centre. In January 1991, a young man from Iran, one from Zaire and the 41 year-old Bifo were evicted from that same flat by the landlord. In between those two dates, not only 19 years had passed through those walls, but also an incalculable amount of people, stories, political movements, zines, free radios, police raids, and all sorts of poetic and existential experiments.
