Only two generations ago Korean people were so poor that starvation was a frequent and widespread experience. Today, Koreans have reached the same level of wealth and consumption of the most advanced countries in the West. The minimum wage is 4.800 won per hour, more or less 3.5 Euros, and the majority of workers manage to cash around 1500 Euros per month. Teachers are paid better than in Italy or England, around 2000 Euros per month.

But for the youngest generation the prospects are not as rosy. Renting a house has become impossible for the majority of young people, who cannot afford to pay advances of fifty thousand dollars.

Proteste aeree

Solo due generazioni fa i coreani erano così poveri che la fame era un’esperienza frequente e largamente diffusa. Nello spazio di due generazioni hanno raggiunto lo stesso livello di ricchezza e di consumo dei paesi più avanzati dell’occidente. Il salario minimo è di circa 3.5 orari e la maggioranza degli operai industriali guadagna intorno a 1500 euro al mese. Gli insegnanti sono pagati meglio che in Italia o in Inghilterra. Ma le prospettive sono difficili per l’ultima generazione. La precarietà si diffonde, il costo dell’educazione cresce mentre si sta realizzando la riforma neoliberista dell’università. Affittare una casa è impossibile per la maggioranza dei giovani che non possono pagare anticipi di cinquantamila dollari. Sempre più i giovani sono costretti a fare debiti bancari per pagarsi l’affitto o gli studi.

Aaron Swartz e Bartleby

Non ho mai conosciuto personalmente Aaron Swartz, e non posso interpretare il suo suicidio, perché quella scelta non è mai effetto di una singola causa ed è comunque impossibile da “spiegare”.

Eppure.

Eppure io so qualcosa su quel che l’ha spinto a fare quello che ha fatto.

Aaron era un programmatore, creatore del formato RSS, e anche scrittore, attivista e ricercatore. Recentemente ha svolto un ruolo centrale nella campagna SOPA (Stop online piracy act) che si è conclusa con un successo e ha impedito una limitazione dei diritti della rete. Era conosciuto dai suoi amici, ma anche dall’FBI per aver scaricato grandi quantità di dati per usarli nella sua ricerca e per rendere pubblici documenti soggetti a proprietà privata. Nel 2008 Swartz aveva scaricato e messo a disposizione di tutti circa il 20% del database Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER)gestiti dall’Administrative Office degli Stati Uniti.

Inoltre, secondo le autorità federali Swartz aveva messo in rete gratuitamente un gran numero di articoli accademici dato che come ricercatore disponeva di un account JSTOR.

JSTOR è un archivio digitale, e come altri database accademici rende disponibile testi a pagamento. Ogni articolo costa tra 19 e 39 dollari. Inoltre JSTOR accetta sottoscrizioni solo da istituzioni, il che significa che uno studioso indipendente o un ricercatore senza affiliazione istituzionale o un ricercatore precario non può accedervi.

I never met Aaron Swartz, but he was my brother, although much younger than me.

I cannot interpret his suicide. Suicide is never the effect of a single cause, and it is always impossible to “explain” death.

Nevertheless.

Nevertheless I know something about the causes that pushed Aaron to do what he did.

He was a computer programmer, creator and developer of the web feed format RSS, and a writer, an activist and also a Harvard researcher. Recently he played a prominent role in the SOPA campaign (Stop online piracy act) which had a successful outcome.

Aaron was known – by his friends and by FBI as well - for a history of downloading massive data sets, both to use in research and to release public domain documents from behind paywalls.

In 2008, Swartz downloaded, and released, approximately 20% of the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) database of United States federal court documents managed by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.

According to federal authorities, over the course of a few weeks in late 2010 and early 2011 Swartz, having a JSTOR personal account as a research fellow at Harvard University, downloaded a large number of academic journal articles via JSTOR.

Suicidio e Lotta

Congedarsi dalla lotta: il suicidio nell’antropologia politica.

Si parla molto di suicidio, di questi tempi. Sembra che il corpo del suicida sia tra i pochi elementi, nella narrazione della crisi attuale, capaci di scalfire la criminale impeccabilità del potere. Il corpo del suicida e’ esibito, sfruttato, sballottato, impiegato come metafora, come arma emotiva e fisica. Di fronte alla sofferenza di milioni le leggi non si piegano, ma di fronte al gesto suicidario si fermano i carri armati.

Si è popolato di gesti suicidi l’immaginario degli ultimi vent’anni, a partire da quei corpi che precipitavano dalle Torri Gemelle in fiamme, e subito dopo la sequenza infinita di attacchi kamikaze in Iraq e Afghanistan – attacchi, va detto, che hanno causato più morti tra le file dell’esercito USA che le azioni di combattimento vere e proprie. È stata poi l’autocombustione di Mohamed Bouazizi a scatenare la rivolta in Tunisia l’anno scorso, e non certo il passaparola su Twitter o Facebook – come invece hanno tentato di farci credere i giornalisti occidentali. E sono gli atti suicidari delle vittime della crisi finanziaria a conquistare, forse più delle proteste di massa, le pagine dei quotidiani d’Occidente.

In the spring of 1836, just one year before his death, the Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi wrote what is considered his poetic testament, La Ginestra o il Fiore del Deserto (The Broom or the Flower of the Desert). Starting off with the description of a flower of a broom plant growing on the arid slopes of the volcano Vesuvius, Leopardi progressed into a fiery attack against both the delusions of his century – which still believed in a ‘magnificent progressive fate’ – and those who failed to recognize the malignity of Nature towards us humans.
Nature in particular is targeted by Leopardi as the true enemy of humanity.

He has a noble nature
who dares to raise his voice
against our common fate,
and with an honest tongue,
not compromising truth,
admits the evil fate allotted us,
our low and feeble state:

Suicide as protest in Romania and Tunisia

On 24th December 2010, in the Romanian parliament, a bleeding man was shouting “Freedom!” while being carried outside by the paramedics. He had just tried to kill himself, jumped from the journalists’ balcony, little before the prime minister began his speech.
This surreal image is the pitiless representation of Romanian society: an autistic political class and an aphasic public opinion.

Il 24 dicembre 2010, nel Parlamento rumeno, un uomo in fin di vita urla "Libertà!" a squarcia gola, mentre, insanguinato, viene portato via dai soccorsi. Si era appena gettato nel vuoto, dal balcone dei giornalisti, poco prima che il premier iniziasse il suo discorso.
Quest’immagine surreale contiene in sé la rappresentazione impietosa della società rumena. Una classe politica autistica e un’opinione pubblica afasica.
